Simple + Southern Sunday No. 7

December 7, 2014~ Simple + Southern Sunday

“But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream,
saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived
in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus,
for he will save his people from their sins’”
Matthew‬ ‭1‬:‭20-21‬

sss2

“The birth of Christ is the central event in the history of the earth — the very thing the whole story has been about.” — C.S. Lewis

Sunday is a wonderful day to reflect on the goodness of God in our everyday living.  Have you ever thought about seemingly small things–the ones that seem insignificant–as exactly what God will use to glorify himself and carry out his plan?  Take, for example, the Christmas story.  Caesar Augustus called for a census and that meant each person had to return to his or her hometown.  After they arrived in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to Jesus there, and laid him in a manger.  That is how the prophecy (Micah 5:2) was fulfilled  that the Savior would be born in Bethlehem (Luke 2:1-7).  Joseph was following the law of the land. But God, in his providence was working this together in order that Jesus be born in Bethlehem, just as he said he would.  Don’t overlook the small things–they may, in fact, be the most important.

May you experience the joy of His coming as a baby in the manger!!

We really do live in Turkeytown, a Native American settlement established in 1788.  It is named for the original founder of the settlement, the Chickamauga Cherokee chief, Little Turkey. This is a little country church in our area, TurkeyTown United Methodist!

sss

This really made me laugh this week!  Looking through my kitchen window into our pasture, I noticed something on the head of the target practice deer!  I walked outside to inspect and this is what I saw!  We can call him Rudolph the Redneck Reindeer!

This picture really is special!  2007 was a life-changing year for our family…we hope to share our story with you in January.  The very fact that Butch and I were able to make a trip to NYC in early December was nothing short of miraculous.  As you can see, the stress put extra pounds on both of us!  God is faithful!

I have lived in Gadsden my whole life–and we have the cutest downtown area!  Friday night they hosted the “North Poll Stroll” where many came dressed in character. This is a picture of the Ice Princess who joined in on the fun!

My precious Aunt Mae (83 years young and the last of my mother’s nine siblings) moved from her house where she had lived for sixty-five years to assisted living in early summer.  She has the best attitude and is such a joy!

“And again, Isaiah says, ‘The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations;
the Gentiles will hope in him.’ May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him,
so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”

Glad Tidings: Christmas Kitchen Tour

December 4, 2014~ Decorating

“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel,
whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days”
Micah‬ ‭5‬:‭2‬

We would like to welcome you back to “our refuge” first seen here: Our Refuge. This is our favorite place to spend time and is always the first place we decorate for Christmas!  I am sharing some of my favorite collections with you today.  Christmas evokes so many wonderful memories of family, friends, and places.  This wonderful holiday lifts the spirits and involves all of our senses: the sight of twinkling lights…the smell of  fresh cut pine…the sound of a favorite carol…the taste of home-baked gingerbread cookies…and the touch of a loved one.  It is truly a magical time!  The magic of Christmas is alive today, but it all began in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago.  When God robed himself in human flesh and entered our world as a man, but no less God, he changed the course of human history.  He came to set his people free.  A baby, a king.  Jesus, there’s just something about that name!

c13

The French chest between our two chairs holds a very precious collection.  My Mother made ceramics in the late 70’s and throughout the 80’s.  She made six of the Santas!

c2

This is the largest and is also the last one that she made.  She made several like this and gave them as gifts!

c3

I bought this Christmas journal in 2011 at the Biltmore gift shop in Asheville, North Carolina.  It was a special trip that Butch and I made the first of December that year.  The Biltmore  was decked in all of its finery as we had scheduled the evening candlelight tour!  Oh, how I wished that I had started a Christmas journal when Seth was born!

c4

Mother painted beautiful faces on the Old World Santas!

c5
c7

The Santa on the back was a gift from a friend-and the only one not made by Mother

c6

This Santa always makes us laugh!  Nanny (Mother) let Seth paint him when he was about 6 years old.  He chose the colors and she only painted his face!

c8

These are all German Steinbach nutcrackers except the tall one-which is a Radko music box!

c10

My friend, Brenda started my collection of nutcrackers when she gave me this large Christopher Radko music box.  She also gave me the tall one on the table.

c9
c15

My sweet friends, Janice and Brenda gave me several of the Steinbach’s and I have added to the collection!

c20

The mantle above my cooktop is simple with fresh cedar and fruit.  The plates are dated 1989, 1990, 1991 and were given to me by my friend, Pam!  The reindeer cones were purchased this year at TJ Maxx!

c13

I always decorate the pencil tree with fruit, roses, and feathers!

m3
m6
m7
c19

I enjoy using the ceramic gingerbread house with candles inside to provide ambiance.  The house had a pretty base that my sweetie broke last year.  The carolers were found at Cracker Barrel’s gift shop!

c
c18

Nanny and Pawpaw (my Mother and Daddy) gave the Aladdin costume to Seth.  As a child, he would dress as a different character every day…Batman, Peter Pan, Superman, Aladdin – the list is endless!

c16

Mother and Daddy 1995. We are so blessed to have my Daddy still with us.  He is the sweetest man!

c17

As always, thank you for sharing in our everyday living.  We love your comments!

“O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sins and enter in, be born to us today
We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell
Oh, come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!”
-O Little Town Of Bethlehem

Tablescape Tuesday: ‘Tis The Season

December 2, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and shall call his name Immanuel”
Isaiah‬ ‭7‬:‭14

“It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year“, because we celebrate the birth of Jesus!  During the hustle and bustle of the season, may we not lose sight of why we celebrate.  Without the birth of Christ, there would be no Christmas!  May we all invite him, King Jesus, into our everyday living.

Setting a table for Christmas is always fun!  I just love all the many colors of the season!

I decided to go with tall crystal candlesticks for this setting.  There are 3 different pairs on the table and I bought them several years ago at my favorites–TJ Maxx and Tuesday Morning.

Katy gave me these gorgeous place card holders (actually, they are ornaments).  She saw the idea here: French Country Cottage.  I love that she painted the antlers gold!

My Mother made the Christmas tree napkin rings in the late 70’s.  They remain one of my most cherished gifts.  Every Christmas season when I unpack them, I am reminded of the love that went into all the beautiful things that she made and all the people  with whom she shared her many talents and love!

Several years ago, I was shopping with my friend Elaine and I spotted these glasses at Pier 1.  I really liked them, but didn’t buy them.  A couple of weeks later, Elaine brought me a beautifully wrapped package containing–and you guessed–these beautiful glasses!

The gold deer were also a Pier 1 find!

The Christmas China is Fitz and Floyd Classic Choices in the Winter Holiday pattern.  The salad/dessert plate is Rose Wreath!

When I first saw this pattern in a magazine, I immediately fell in love! I ordered 12 place settings and I have enjoyed that it is not a common pattern!

The tablecloth is Sferra – luxurious and expensive Italian made linens.  But, I bought this at Tuesday Morning for a real bargain!

My friend and fellow designer, Terri, made this faux frosted fruit centerpiece six years ago and it still looks great!

I am looking forward to sharing Christmas tablescapes with you this year!  Hopefully, it will inspire you to welcome your friends and family to your table!

“Come, Thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel’s Strength and Consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear Desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart”
-Charles Wesley

Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlan Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlands in memory of my beautiful Mother who was a lovely example of a Proverbs 31 woman. Mother had the gift of hospitality and shared it with everyone. Karl Rosenfield peonies from my garden fill a treasured keepsake pitcher handed down from my grandmother! A beautiful floral April Cornell ‘Lillianna’ tablecloth and Famille Rose salad plates elevate the status of the old picnic table next to our woodlands. I have collected bejeweled enamel trinket boxes for many years and shared a few on the table for whimsy and fun. For memories of my Mother, click the link in my profile.

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

For more of my Daddy’s story, click the link in my bio.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table!
