It’s Not What You Think!

March 20, 2015~ Everyday Living

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones”
Proverbs‬ ‭17‬:‭22‬
Today I needed a couple of items so I stopped in one of our local pharmacy chains, knowing they’d have what I needed.  As I arrived at checkout, a very nice young lady greeted me, paused, and then asked me a question that was phrased something like this: “Are you possibly 55 years old”?  I did sense a slight reluctance in her words.  I replied that I would in fact turn 64 next month.  And of course, I needed to know the reason for the question and soon learned that it was Senior discount day!  So, with that, I asked my question. ” Would you like to see my ID to prove my age”?  The cashier was very quick to say absolutely not, and that she fully trusted what I said.  She went on to say that she almost didn’t ask because I did not appear to be 55, but was glad now that she did go ahead and inquire.
Now I’m not sure if this was the case or if it was just the most clever approach to this situation I’ve encountered.  Either way, I liked it!  And here is the really big deal about all of this:  for a brief moment, I put aside my usual pride concerning this matter.  I accepted the discount.  This was a first.  I always pay full price, not willing to seek such a discount.  How smart is that? A third factor that could have triggered the cashier’s question is one item that I was purchasing.
I’ll never know. We did not discuss my purchase:

Now I need to explain.  It’s not what you might think.  And it’s not what the cashier may have thought. We have this new cutting board for our kitchen…a beautiful piece made in Europe from very old barn wood.  The safest and best way to prepare and protect it is to treat it with a quality, food grade, mineral oil.  I rest my case!  In case you don’t believe my story about why I bought this item, I am including some evidence of its use. I’ve shown my ID to prove why I was eligible for the discount, so I’ll just move on from here. No pun intended.

New Friends & Old Hymns

March 19, 2015~ Faith, Guest Posts

I am so excited to introduce Stephanie from The Enchanting Rose as our guest on the blog today!  She is a new friend that I met in the blogging world, but we have so many things in common that I was instantly drawn to her.  Many of the things you will see on her blog are fun crafts, tasty recipes, and her love for tea cups!  Above all, her genuine love for Christ shines through her beautiful blog.  One of the aspects of her blog that I love is the way she shares old hymns with her beautiful photography…and today she shares that with us!   I know you will enjoy her lovely post!
A cheery and blessed day to you, lovely readers of Everyday Living!
I am Stephanie and I am the writer, creator, and baker over at
The Enchanting Rose.
It is my joy and pleasure to be with you and I would like to express my gratitude to Pam
for allowing me to share my love for old hymns on her beautiful site.
When Pam contacted me about writing a guest post for her readers
I was quite honored and delighted!
Pam is a lovely, gracious woman and her posts reflect not only
her creativity and wisdom, but also her deep love for our precious Savior.
With Easter upon us, Pam and I thought an Easter hymn would be perfect for today.
Old hymns are a love of mine and I share them every Sunday on my blog.
There is so much wisdom, history,
and depth in the words penned so many years ago.
I hope you enjoy today’s post of praise, worship, and rejoicing. . .

Jesus is not the “Great I WAS”
but rather the “Great I AM!”

Jesus Christ is not only a historical fact but a present-day, living reality.

All of Christianity rests upon the truth that Jesus rose from the grave victorious
 and is now seated at the Father’s right hand as our personal Advocate.
“Fear not; I am the first and the last:
I am he that liveth, and was dead;
and behold, I am alive forevermore,
Amen.”
Revelation 1:17b, 18 {KJV}

Christ Arose

Written by
Robert Lowry, 1826 – 1899

Low in the grave He lay – Jesus, my Savior!
Waiting the coming day – Jesus, my Lord!

Vainly they watch His bed – Jesus, my Savior!
Vainly they seal the dead – Jesus, my Lord!

Death cannot keep his prey – Jesus, my Savior!
He tore the bars away – Jesus, my Lord!

Chorus
Up from the grace e arose,
with a mighty triumph o’er His foes;
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
and He lives forever with His saints to reign,
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah!
Christ arose!

“He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.

Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”
Matthew 28:6

“Now if we be dead with Christ,
we believe that we shall also live with him:
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more;
death hath no more dominion over him.”
Romans 6: 8 – 9
Look, Ye Saints! the Sight is Glorious
Written by
Thomas Kelly, 1769 – 1854
Look, ye saints! the sight is glorious:
See the Man of Sorrows now;
From the fight returned victorious,
Every knee to Him shall bow:
Crown Him! crown Him!
Crowns become the Victor’s brow.

Crown the Savior! angels crown Him!
Rich the trophies Jesus brings;
In the seat of power enthrone Him,
While the vault of heaven rings:
Crown Him! crown Him!
Crown the Savior King of kings.

Sinners in derision crowned Him,
Mocking thus the Savior’s claim;
Saints and angels crowd around Him,
Own His title, praise His name:
Crown Him! crown Him!
Spread abroad the Victor’s fame!

Hark! those bursts of acclamation!
Hark! those loud triumphant chords!
Jesus takes the highest station-
O what joy the sight affords!
Crown Him! crown Him!
King of kings and Lord of lords!

My dear friends,

allow the precious truth of Jesus Christ’s resurrection to thrill your life anew.
Sing with great triumph, “Christ arose!”
We serve a living Savior-
He is the King of kings and Lord of lords!

God sent His Son – they called Him Jesus:
He came to love, heal, and forgive;

He lived and died to buy my pardon,

an empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Because He lives I can face tomorrow;

because He lives all fear is gone;

because I know He holds the future,

and life is worth the living just because He lives.

– Bill Gaither –

Now let the heavens be joyful, let the earth her song begin,
let the round world keep triumph and  all that is therein;
let all things seen and unseen their notes in gladness blend,
for Christ the Lord hath risen, our joy that hath no end!
– From the early eighth century by John of Damascus –
Celebrate and rejoice this Easter season!
Allow your soul to vibrate with joy and “Alleluias”
for all that the risen Savior means to you!

A big heartfelt thanks to Pam

for allowing me to share my love and passion for hymns of worship.
And many thanks to you, dear readers, for joining me today-
I hope your heart was blessed and refreshed.
We have much to praise the Lord for!
Please feel free to come by The Enchanting Rose for a visit.
I always love making new friends 🙂
Love, hugs, and blessings,
Stephanie

Tablescape Tuesday: Bunnies & Lilies

March 17, 2015~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver”
Proverbs‬ ‭25‬:‭11‬

You know when something unexpected just takes you “back”?   By that, I mean that you are taken to a special time and place-one that could never be recreated or replaced!  As I was putting this tablescape together, my mind and heart were flooded with memories of when Seth was about three years old.  He loved Winnie the Pooh-and I, of course, watched with him!  I can’t even begin to tell you the hours spent watching the antics of A.A. Milne’s classic characters in the “Hundred Acre Wood”!  We would hit rewind on those video tapes so many times we had them memorized.  In one of our favorite episodes, “Party Poohper”, Rabbit was planning a party. He was the practical one and the self-appointed leader among his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood.  Much time and effort went into the planning of Rabbit’s party, only for it to completely fall apart.  And I love the comfort that Rabbit found, even when his well-planned party didn’t pan out…

“Who needs a schedule for a party?  Parties are supposed to be fun!  And you can have fun whenever you want”

I still have a love for rabbits, and I can nearly bet that it started with this sweet memory.  We welcome you to this, our second spring tablescape.
Lucky for us, our party didn’t fall apart as Rabbit’s did…but even if it did, we would still have fun!

The sun was actually in abundance on Sunday morning!  It has been so rare over the past weeks that Butch asked me what that “bright light” was!  As I was shooting the pics, I was grateful to see the sunshine coming through the bamboo shades and the promise of spring’s arrival!

Even though spring has not officially “sprung”, I was ready to see happy colors on our dining table!

I have always enjoyed watching the rabbits from my kitchen window.  It seems that over the past few years they have increased in population (we all know what rabbits do!). I have a small collection of ceramic rabbits that I have acquired along with oil paintings of bunnies!
This is a Fitz and Floyd rabbit pitcher that my sweetie gave me!

This is the companion bunny tea pot!

Pink and yellow lilies in ice cream sundae glasses were the perfect addition to our bunny family!

This sweet bunny was a gift from my friend, Kathy’s granddaughter, Nalin!

The “Herb Garden” FF bunny is part of the set seen here:  Anxiously Awaiting Spring.

The setting began with a new yellow and white seersucker tablecloth recently purchased from TJ Maxx.  The hardboard cork-backed placemats have a floral and butterfly design.  You often see the pink and white toile dinner plates by Churchill along with the wicker chargers.  The cabbage salad plates were a Tuesday Morning find a few years ago!

The pink napkins are in one of my favorite napkin rings-hand painted mini clay pots! I bought these from a craft vendor at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens.

For the center piece, I used a cake stand with a bird’s nest and eggs tucked in moss.  It’s topped with a glass cloche for protection from the bunnies!

The rustic place card holders made by my friend, JoAnn for Seth and Allie’s wedding add to our spring table. The carrot salt and pepper set was a gift from Katy!  Carrots and rabbits go together, right?

A small bunny carrying dried roses!

The bunnies seem to be hiding under the lilies!

For a pop of color, a pair of green taper candles in crystal holders was placed on our tablescape!

I love welcoming spring to my dining room!

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome”
-Anne Bradstreet

Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlan Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlands in memory of my beautiful Mother who was a lovely example of a Proverbs 31 woman. Mother had the gift of hospitality and shared it with everyone. Karl Rosenfield peonies from my garden fill a treasured keepsake pitcher handed down from my grandmother! A beautiful floral April Cornell ‘Lillianna’ tablecloth and Famille Rose salad plates elevate the status of the old picnic table next to our woodlands. I have collected bejeweled enamel trinket boxes for many years and shared a few on the table for whimsy and fun. For memories of my Mother, click the link in my profile.

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

 I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table!
