Tablescape Tuesday: Peacocks & Feathers

November 4, 2014~ Food & Entertaining, Tablescape Tuesday

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God…”
Luke 12:6

Peacocks–aren’t they just beautiful birds?!  Their iridescent tail feathers of green and blue, along with “eye” markings of blue, gold, red and other hues are gorgeous examples of the artistry of our Creator!  Since I love feathers and peacocks, this dinnerware gracing our tablescape caught my eye many years ago.   I love using it on a regular basis and its colors are so adaptable to every season!

This week, I really let my imagination run wild!

Table set for six!

The more layers, textures, and patterns used make for more of a visual feast!  I have collected “stuff” for forty years.  That is what makes it fun!!

The first layer is a cream color linen/cotton blend tablecloth.  Dinnerware pattern is “The Artesian Road Collection” by Tracy Porter and is hand-painted.  Although discontinued, it can still be found on the web.

I used my feather placemats over the cloth to add layers and texture.  What I love about this china pattern is the different colors and designs of each piece!

Notice the bamboo details around the edge of the pattern

Teal votives provided the perfect candlelight!

As a table runner, I used a teal scarf with a Greek key design that I bought last year in Rhodes, Greece.  Tip:  I often use scarves as table runners…so much variety to choose from!

Instead of flowers, I used peacock feathers!

I purchased the pair of old figurines from a friend.  There are no markings on them, so I don’t know anything about them–all I know is that I love them and they were inexpensive!  I use them on my family room mantel, but often move them to the dining table.

My friend, Brenda, gave me the peacock place card holders.  Aren’t they so fun?! They always receive lots of comments!

Feather napkin rings offer texture and drama!  I chose teal napkins to complement the peacock theme.

The stemware remains a favorite and was purchased at Tuesday Morning at a bargain!

The miniature vases holding the feathers are also Tracy Porter

The three tier dessert stand is the piece de resistance of the “Artesian Road Collection”.  It is holding delicious pears for this tablescape, but you can normally find it at home on my kitchen island!!

Thank you, my friends, for tuning in to our blog.  Your love and support have been a constant encouragement throughout our blogging journey!

I love when you comment!!

Blessings,
Pam

Taking It All Inn

November 3, 2014~ Travel

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”
Philippians 4:7

I have had a wonderful birthday week!

May I share?

My friend Kathy planned lunch and an afternoon in Mentone that gave us a chance to catch up on our everyday living!  You can see many of the pictures I took that day here:  Simple + Southern Sunday.  My brother and sister-in-law planned a sweet birthday lunch at my Daddy’s!  Katy has a day planned for us coming up in a few days that I am sure will be featured on the blog.  Seth and Allie made me a beautiful present that was inspired when we were vacationing at Triple Creek Ranch seen here:  Triple Creek Ranch: A Montana Hideaway (Part One) and Triple Creek Ranch: A Montana Hideaway (Part Two). Then, I came home on Friday to find presents on the porch. My precious friend, Joann had handcrafted something beautiful for me!  Stay tuned for an upcoming “Tablescape Tuesday” to see Seth & Allie’s gift, along with Joann’s!

I promised on last Thursday’s blog (Roadtrippin’ and Tablescapin’) that I would share what we did for my birthday.  Butch, as always, had planned a fabulous get-a-way!  We went back to Old Edwards Inn & Spa in Highlands, North Carolina–the same place we celebrated my birthday two years ago!  Highlands is located in the southern Appalachians within the Nantahala Forest.  Old Edwards Inn is a European style resort with a casual but elegant ambiance!  The spa has been named a top hotel spa in North America by Conde Nast and both times, I can say it was heavenly!  There are several dining options and all are outstanding!  You can visit their website here: Old Edwards Inn.

I hope you will cozy up in a comfortable chair with a good cup of coffee and celebrate with me!

Beautiful scenery along the route to Highlands

I love how beautifully Old Edwards has maintained this historic property!

The Inn gives an aura of “an old monied county club”, but that is not the case at all.  There is no stuffiness or pretense, just perfect Southern hospitality

Old Edwards has won many coveted awards!

The entry to our spa suite

Sitting area by the windows with house-baked cookies awaiting our arrival!

Our suite had a golf theme with beautiful fabrics, art, and books!

The weather turned chilly, so the fire was warm and cozy!

Of all the hotels we have visited, this has to be the one of the most amazing baths!  Gorgeous marble shower, tub surround, and heated floor gave it a spa feel!

Roof top terrace restaurant closed for the winter!

German Oktoberfest was still being celebrated!

Lovely view into the dining room

Shopping at Acorns, an Old Edwards shop!

Olive oil tasting at Mountain Fresh Grocery, an upscale phenomenon!

The ever cheerful patterns of Tracy Porter dinnerware at a Highlands shop!

Dining room reception area

Small starter plate of house-made pimento cheese and spicy buttermilk crackers!

Vanilla roasted pears and crispy goat cheese fritters, kale and arugula salad, candied walnuts, butternut jelly with walnut vinaigrette!  Perfecto!

Bourbon glazed pork belly and poached farm egg with cranberry-cornbread purée, roasted oyster mushrooms and kale chips!

Springer mountain chicken and dumplings:  Benton’s bacon wrapped chicken breast, celery root and green garlic purée, glazed baby carrots, roasted sweet potato gnocchi and spring onions with natural pan jus

Individual old fashioned chocolate chip pie with salted caramel ice cream!

Clubby dining room

Hummingbirds Lounge

Fresh flowers is a must in a nice hotel!

The library–one of my favorite spaces!

Met this lovely and vivacious lady, Lisa, who was also celebrating her birthday on the 30th.  I think we became instant friends!

More shopping!

Beautiful outdoor spaces for the world class spa!

Richly paneled and furnished hallway in the spa

Spa cafe offering a healthy menu

The spa’s Fireside Lounge!

Complimentary teas and fruit in the Fireside Lounge!

Calming and peaceful solarium where we enjoyed solitude after our afternoon of spa treatments!!

Dinner on my birthday was at a restaurant outside of the hotel!  Sorry no food pics!  Just my sweet husband and me!!!

Rose petal turndown service was a perfect ending to my birthday!

Thank you for celebrating with us!  What about you?  What are you celebrating?  We would love to hear about your everyday living.  Please share in your comments below!

Blessings,
Pam

Simple + Southern Sunday No. 2

November 2, 2014~ Simple + Southern Sunday

“I was glad when they said to me,
‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’”
Psalm 122:1

sss2

We really enjoyed putting together last week’s post, Simple Southern Sunday!  It really triggered something in us to take the time to look for the little things in life–the things that bring such joy!  Our Creator is in all parts of our everyday living and it is so evident if we just look with anticipating eyes!  Please take time to enjoy and reflect on his goodness.

These pictures all bring a smile to our faces.  We hope that you find the beauty of everyday living!!  Jesus truly understands.

Scenic Cullasaja River in Macon County, NC wearing its autumn splendor!

We love barns!  This Hayesville, NC barn owner seems to show no partiality!

This picture of Nico, Isaiah, and Benji, our nephews, is off-the-meter-cute!  You can read more about them here: An Unexpected Journey.

Dry Falls near Highlands, NC, not so dry!

This church caught my eye this week!

Katy was at a wedding last weekend and this was the groom’s cake–red velvet armadillo!  Anyone ever seen Steel Magnolias?  This cracked Butch and me up and it really hit home, since we are constantly battling armadillos here at our house!

Our friend that always rides his three-wheel bike near our home. He rides daily and in all weather–except the rain! He always proudly displays our American flag and we could learn so much from the joy he finds in his everyday living.

My sweet Daddy is the most loyal Alabama fan ever!!  RTR!

This unique shop, The Spice & Tea Exchange in Highlands, NC was a foodie’s delight!

Yesterday was very cold and windy in northeast AL–perfect for a breakfast of toasted pecan and pumpkin pie spice pancakes with maple syrup and fresh spiced whipped cream!

Thank you for letting us share our Sunday with y’all!  We always look forward to reading your comments!

Blessings,
Butch and Pam

Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlan Happy Wednesday! I set a table next to our woodlands in memory of my beautiful Mother who was a lovely example of a Proverbs 31 woman. Mother had the gift of hospitality and shared it with everyone. Karl Rosenfield peonies from my garden fill a treasured keepsake pitcher handed down from my grandmother! A beautiful floral April Cornell ‘Lillianna’ tablecloth and Famille Rose salad plates elevate the status of the old picnic table next to our woodlands. I have collected bejeweled enamel trinket boxes for many years and shared a few on the table for whimsy and fun. For memories of my Mother, click the link in my profile.

With glorious weather, the table next to our woodl With glorious weather, the table next to our woodlands was perfect for teatime! It is Tea on Tuesdays with blogging friends Mary and Kitty. The table is enhanced by views toward the mountain, woodlands, and the large Snowball Viburnum. The verdant rye grass appears as a green carpet that has been spread for Easter! Vintage Fitz and Floyd ‘Herb Garden’ teapots, sugar and creamer, and oval tray are suited for springtime with their embossed bows, vegetables, and words. A bouquet of Kwanzan Cherry blossoms add more spring color to the setting.

I am serving a simple teatime with Earl Grey tea, savory egg salad filled phyllo cups, and sweet vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and macarons! A favorite cottage rose tablecloth and Essential napkins are by April Cornell.

We are most blessed to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, being the source of new life, yet new life that is eternal. The beauty of this spring will again give way to another autumn in a few months, but the significance of His empty tomb will never change! Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our Happy Thursday! I love setting a table next to our woodlands and this is the first one of the season, an Easter/Spring table! I love all the sweet bunny decorations, but Easter is so much more. We celebrate Easter because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bodily resurrection enables all those who choose to follow Him to have assured victory over our greatest enemy…death!

I look forward each year when some of my favorite blooms display their amazing beauty in our garden. Snowball viburnum in its full glory with large creamy white blooms. Climbing Lady Banks Rose is covered in hundreds of miniature yellow blooms cascading to the ground. An old-fashioned Bridal Wreath Spirea with its branches arching to the ground in a fountain-like growth habit is loaded with showy double white flowers in clusters of three to six that resemble a bride’s wreath. I still claim the Kwanzan Cherry tree even though it is now on our son’s property. Its ruffled pink double pink blossoms are some of my favorite blooms. All four of these blooms make up an arrangement with a few tulips from the grocery store.

A fluffle of moss bunnies hopped up to the picnic table. A ‘Charming’ tablecloth with Mary Lake-Thompson napkins and Williams Sonoma enchanting ‘Famille Rose’ bunny plates!

I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on m I often shared my sweet Daddy and his stories on my blog. My precious Daddy passed away peacefully on March 26th at the age of 94, surrounded by his beloved family! He was born during the depths of the Great Depression. That may have been part of the reason he was always content and loved the simple things.

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

After high school graduation he signed to play professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians Organization. His baseball career was cut short when he was drafted in the army. He was seriously wounded in the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart and two bronze stars. Upon returning home, he married my beautiful Mother and they shared 54 wonderful years together before she passed away suddenly.

My brother and I grew up in a Christian home, bathed in love, calm, security, and contentment, under the care of the two finest parents anyone could have. Daddy was known as Pawpaw to his three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

My heart is broken, he was the best Daddy a girl could have. I know he is present with the Lord and I rejoice in that promise, knowing too, that my Mother is also in the eternal presence of our Heavenly Father.

Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition Welcome to Sunshine Cottage and the March edition of Tea on Tuesdays. My inspiration for teatime is the beautiful linens from @april.cornell With the celebration of their 50th anniversary, many Heritage Prints from the archives have returned. Eden is one of the beautiful patterns that has returned. It is a soft purple paradise where butterflies float, roses bloom, and soft sage leaves levitate. As an April Cornell Brand Ambassador, I was gifted these gorgeous linens! I have been a collector of @april.cornell linens for many years…the floral patterns resonate with my love of English Country.

I am serving my favorite, Earl Gray tea, from an Eileen’s Reserve teapot. Teacups by Grace Teaware and vintage Rose Chintz salad plates by Johnson Brothers add more floral patterns to the mix. Japanese Magnolia blooms were cut from my garden and placed in a lilypad teapot!

Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold Happy first Monday of February! After so many cold days, we are experiencing a tease of spring with a 73 degree day that is forecast. After the gray and cloudy days, I needed a dose of color and decided to set a colorful citrus themed brunch! Using a bird gold and pewter stand, I mixed a citrus medley of lemons, oranges, and limes with pink and white carnations as the centerpiece. The table is highlighted with blue and white dishware. Fresh squeezed orange juice, French-pressed coffee and sweet treats of lemon poppyseed muffins, lemon cake with lemon icing, and lemon pastries are perfect for a small brunch. A faux lemon topiary belonged to my beloved Mother and seemed a perfect addition to a citrus-themed table!
